This paper deals with the control of nonlinear systems in the presence of state and control constraints for discrete-time dynamics in finite-dimensional spaces. The viability kernel is known to play a basic role for the analysis of such problems and the design of viable control feedbacks. Unfortunately, this kernel may display very nonregular geometry and its computation is not an easy task in general. In the present paper, we show how monotonicity properties of both dynamics and constraints allow for relevant analytical upper and lower approximations of the viability kernel through weakly and strongly invariant sets. An example on fish harvesting management illustrates some of the assertions. |

ABSTRACT This work was carried out in order to evaluate the susceptibility to ALS-inhibiting herbicides of the Brazilian biotype of glyphosate-resistant A. palmeri, considering different chemical groups. For that, four experiments were performed, each with one of the following herbicides: glyphosate, chlorimuron-ethyl, cloransulan-methyl and imazethapyr. In each trial, treatments were organized according to a 2x8 factorial scheme, in which two were the species of Amaranthus (A. palmeri and A. spinosus) and eight were the herbicide rates (16D, 8D, 4D, 2D, D, 1/2D, 1/4D and herbicide absence; being D the commercial rate of each product). For glyphosate, D = 720 g a.e. ha-1; for chlorimuron-ethyl, D = 20 g ha-1; for cloransulanmethyl, D = 30 g ha-1; for... |

In this paper it is argued, using examples of disease emergence in aquatic animals in Europe, that the introduction of non-native species drives disease emergence by both extending the geographic range of parasites and pathogens and facilitating host-switching. Enteric red mouth disease and infectious haematopoietic necrosis of salmonids have extended their geographic range from North America to Europe with the import of live fish (Pimephales promelas) and rainbow trout eggs, respectively. Host-switching results in disease emergence when previously unidentified commensal organisms or known pathogen switch to new naïve hosts. The most serious endemic diseases of wild aquatic animals in Europe in recent years can be traced to the introduction of non-native... |

Toxorhynchites guadeloupensis (Dyar & Knab), a poorly known mosquito species, was observed preying upon Aedes aegypti (L.) larvae, in an oviposition trap placed for routine dengue entomological surveillance, during 2003-2004 in the urban area of Boa Vista, Roraima, Brazil. This is the first report for Tx. guadeloupensis using Ae. aegypti oviposition traps as breeding places. This finding may have important consequences in the epidemiology and local dengue control since Ae. aegypti density is a basic variable in dengue prediction. Whether predation of Ae aegypti by Tx. guadeloupensis in the Amazon is of significance, is a question to be examined. Also, larval predation may be a cause for underestimation of the actual Ae aegypti numbers. Together... |

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of different control agents of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus associated with ovitraps under laboratory and field conditions. Five treatments were used: grass infusion + Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (gI + Bti), grass infusion + Saccharopolyspora spinosa (gI + Ss), grass infusion + Pyriproxyfen (gI + P), distilled water + Toxorhynchites haemorrhoidalis (dW + Th), and grass infusion (gI) (control). The highest mean number of eggs of both species were obtained with grass infusion in the laboratory. Among control agents, the lowest mean of A. aegypti eggs occurred with gI + Ss and the lowest mean of A. albopictus eggs occurred with dW + Th. There was no difference between treatments in... |

ABSTRACT: In Brazil, some populations of Conyza bonariensis and C. canadensis are glyphosate resistant and there are populations of C. sumatrensis (Sumatran fleabane) presenting multiple resistance to both glyphosate and chlorimuron. During the 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 seasons, growers reported failures to control Sumatran fleabane with paraquat. This study investigated the potential of paraquat resistant Sumatran fleabane populations in Paraná state, Brazil. Populations with suspected paraquat resistance were tested in the field in 2016 season. In 2017, seeds from these populations were collected, sown and grown in a greenhouse. Paraquat dose-response curve experiments were performed in Mogi Mirim, SP; Londrina, PR and Palotina, PR using doses of 0, 50,... |
